mwawIturea è il nome mwbagreco della provincia derivato dal nome mwbqbiblico Jetur, che rappresentava un figlio di mwbgIsmaele della Genesicite-ref-1[1]. Il nome della regione è menzionato solo una volta nella mwcwBibbiacite-ref-2[2], mentre tra i contemporanei il nome del popolo degli Iturei è tradotto in greco: Ἰτουραῖοι.

Prima dei Romani

È menzionata come una delle tribù sottomesse da mwfaDavidecite-ref-3[3], re degli mwgqEbrei, ed ancora da mwggStrabone, mwgwPlinio il Vecchio, mwhaGiuseppe Flavio ed altri. Essi ritenevano che fosse una tribù di origine mwhqaraba, conosciuta dai mwhgRomani come un popolo di predatoricite-ref-4[4], ma anche apprezzato per la grande abilità dei suoi arciericite-ref-5[5].

L'Iturea si trovava secondo mwkaGiuseppe Flaviocite-ref-6[6], a nord della mwlqGalilea, mentre nel mwlg105 a.C. mwlwAristobulo I, avendo sconfitto gli Iturei, annesse parte di questo paese alla vicina mwmaGiudea, imponendo loro la religione ebraica. mwmqStrabonecite-ref-7[7] include i territori dell'Iturea nel regno di mwngTolomeo, che regnò dall'mwnw85 al mwoa40 a.C.

Roma in Oriente

A Tolomeo successe il figlio, Lisania, chiamato da mwpaCassio Dione Cocceianocite-ref-8[8] "Re degli Iturei". Nel mwqq23 a.C. la Iturea con le province limitrofe cadde nelle mani di Zenodoro, figlio di Lisaniacite-ref-9[9]. Tre anni più tardi, alla morte del re Zenodoro, mwrwAugusto dava la Iturea ad mwsaErode il Grande, che a sua volta la diede al figlio mwsqErode Filippocite-ref-10[10].

Parte della Iturea si trovava nella regione dei monti del mwtwLibano, come ci viene confermato da un'iscrizione del mwua6 d.C.cite-ref-11[11], nella quale un certo mwvqQ.Æmilius Secundus fu inviato dall'allora governatore di mwvgGalazia e mwvwPanfilia, mwwaPublio Sulpicio Quirinio, contro gli Iturei del mwwqLibano. Nel mwwg38 mwwwCaligola diede in dono la Iturea ad un certo mwxaSoemo, che è chiamato da mwxqCassio Dione Cocceianocite-ref-12[12] e da mwygCornelio Tacitocite-ref-13[13] "Re degli Iturei".

Dopo la morte di Soemo, avvenuta nel mwaa49, il suo regno fu incorporato nella provincia di mwaqSiriacite-ref-14[14].

Coorti ausiliarie nell'esercito romano

Con la definitiva sottomissione ed alleanza di questa regione dell'antico mwcgLibano all'mwcwImpero romano, la popolazione degli Iturei iniziò a fornire mwdatruppe ausiliarie all'mwdqesercito romano:

• mweaAla I Augusta Ituraeorum sagittaria è attestata in mweqPannonia superiore ad mwegArrabonacite-ref-15[15], e anche nella vicina mwfwPannonia inferiorecite-ref-16[16] (probabilmente ad mwhaIntercisacite-ref-17[17]) in un periodo non precisato (forse sul finire del mwiqI secolo). Potrebbe aver partecipato alla guerra di conquista della mwigDacia sotto mwiwTraianocite-ref-18[18]. Fu trasferita in mwkaMauretania mwkqCaesariensiscite-ref-19[19] forse sotto mwlgAdriano. La troviamo in mwlwPannonia inferiore nel mwma139cite-ref-20[20], nel mwnq148cite-ref-21[21], nel mwog149 e nel mwow156cite-ref-22[22] sotto mwqaAntonino Piocite-ref-23[23], nel mwrq166 sotto mwrgMarco Aurelio e mwrwLucio Verocite-ref-24[24] e nel mwta192 sotto mwtqCommodocite-ref-25[25].
• mwuwAla I Ituraeorum sagittariorum civium Romanorum, presente in Mauretania Tingitana sotto il regno di Adriano. A Tipasa in mwvaNumidia a metà del II secolo d.C. Sotto Antonino Pio (138-145) partecipa alla campagna di Mauritania.
• mwvgAla II Augusta Ituraeorum sagittaria, forse operante in Pannonia, mwvwMesia e Dacia.
• mwwqCohors I Ituraeorum civium romanorum che potrebbe coincidere con la mwwgCohors I Ituraeorum sagittaria, in questo caso potrebbe non essere mwwwmwxacoorte equitata (vale a dire un corpo misto di cavalieri e fanti). La troviamo in mwxqSiria nell'mwxg88 sotto mwxwDomizianocite-ref-26[26], poi in mwzaMauretania Tingitana nel mwzq110-mwzg111 sotto mwzwTraianocite-ref-27[27], mw1a122cite-ref-28[28], nel mw2q131 sotto mw2gAdrianocite-ref-29[29], nel mw3w151cite-ref-30[30], nel mw5a153cite-ref-31[31], nel mw6q157cite-ref-32[32] e nel mw7g161cite-ref-33[33] sotto mw8wAntonino Pio.
• mw9qCohors I Augustacite-ref-34[34] mw-gIturaeorum equitatacite-ref-35[35] posizionata in un periodo non precisato in mw-wGermania superiore, in zona mwaqaMogontiacumcite-ref-36[36] (mwaquI secolo?). La troviamo in mwaqyPannonia sotto mwaqcTito nel mwaqg79cite-ref-37[37], sotto mwaq0Traiano nei diplomi del mwaq498 e mwaq8103cite-ref-38[38] forse a mwarqBrigetiocite-ref-39[39]. È in Dacia come mwarkI Ituraeorum Augusta nel mwaro110 e mwars111cite-ref-40[40] in zona mwasaPorolissumcite-ref-41[41] ed ancora nel mwasu137 sotto mwasyAdrianocite-ref-42[42], nel mwass144cite-ref-43[43] e mwata158 sotto mwateAntonino Piocite-ref-44[44], fino almeno a mwatyMarco Aurelio nel mwatc179cite-ref-45[45].
• mwat0Cohors II Ituraeorum equitata si trova insieme alla III Ituraeorum in mwat4Egittocite-ref-46[46] già dall'epoca di mwaumGermanico nel mwauq18cite-ref-47[47]. È qui attestata ancora nell'mwauk82 sotto mwauoDomizianocite-ref-cil-16-29-48-0[48], nel mwau8106cite-ref-ae-1968-513-49-0[49] sotto mwavqTraiano ed ancora sotto mwavuAntonino Pio nel mwavy157cite-ref-50[50].
• mwavwCohors III Ituraeorum equitatacite-ref-51[51] la troviamo all'epoca di mwaweDomiziano (mwawi82cite-ref-cil-16-29-48-1[48].), di mwawcTraiano nel mwawg106cite-ref-ae-1968-513-49-1[49] ed mwaw0Antonino Pio in mwaw4Egittocite-ref-52[52].
• mwaxqCohors IV Ituraeorum; mwaxuCohors V Ituraeorum; mwaxyCohors VI Ituraeorum: di loro non sappiamo nulla, se non che esistette la VII.

Cohors VI Ituraeorum è ricordata in una lapide - dell'anno 136 d.C. - del mwaxgtempio egizio di Dakka, secondo la testimonianza di G. B. Belzoni, mwaxkViaggi in Egitto e Nubia, Milano 1825, I, p.mwaxo 155.

• mwax0Cohors VII Ituraeorum si trovava in mwax4Egitto (a mwax8Tebe), forse nel II secolocite-ref-53[53].
